Chapter 18 Summary
After making the most ghastly decision to accept the monster’s plea in making a new human, Frankenstein returns home to settle down and give himself a mental rest. When he arrived home his family confronted him in the most serious matter a not so relaxing presentment. His parents explained to him their longtime expectation for his marriage to Elizabeth, his adopted sister and well beloved one. A little shocked, Frankenstein pondered this idea, and decided that he would be indeed happy to marry his well loved ‘cousin’ Elizabeth. At first Elizabeth was unsure of the genuality in Frankenstein acceptance, afraid he is not really in love with her. But, realizing himself for the first time his true love for Elizabeth, Frankenstein convinces Elizabeth his feelings are real and he cannot wait to marry her, yet he has to finish one thing first, which may so happen to be creating another monster. The new couple announces their status as engaged, and as old time friend Henry Clerval hears of this new engagement he declares him and Frankenstein should go on a trip before Frankenstein is tied down with the bonds of marriage. So, off they embark, ready to embrace the wrath of their native nature on yet another adventure. |
Chapter 19 Summary
Chapter nineteen describes the whole of Henry and Frankenstein's bachelor trip through England. The two friends go to many scenic places including Oxford and London, however Frankenstein cannot seem to enjoy himself to the fullest due to his still shocking acceptance in the monster's offer. He felt like a slave the whole time, knowing that he must get the work for the monster done soon or else he will receive grave consequences. Even the addition to their group of a lot of Scottish didn’t brighten Frankenstein enough for the trip to be enjoyable. So, near halfway through the trip Frankenstein explains to Clerval that he must go, for necessary reasons, but that he can stay with the Scottish and continue the adventure. Clerval solemnly agrees, and Frankenstein embarks off, ready to break his will and start on his second creation. |
